Winter Storage Tips for E-Bike Lithium Batteries

Winter Storage Tips for E-Bike Lithium Batteries

Do ✅ Don't ❌
Store at 40-60% charge Store at 0% or 100% charge
Remove from the bike Leave it attached to the bike in a cold place
Store INDOORS at 10-20°C (50-68°F) Store in a freezing garage, shed, or balcony
Check the charge level every 2 months Forget about it for the entire winter
Let a cold battery reach room temp before charging Charge it immediately after bringing it in from the cold
Use the manufacturer's original charger Use a cheap, off-brand charger

By following these steps, you are investing in the longevity of your battery, saving money on a costly replacement, and ensuring you have full power and range ready for your first sunny spring ride. Enjoy the break, and see you on the road when it warms up.

What to Absolutely Avoid

  • ❌ Leaving the battery on the bike in an unheated garage/shed. This combines the worst of all worlds: cold temperatures and potential parasitic drain.

  • ❌ Storing it fully charged (100%) or completely dead (0%). This is the fastest way to ruin your battery.

  • ❌ Charging the battery when it's freezing cold. If you bring the battery in from a cold car or garage, let it warm up to room temperature for several hours before plugging it in to charge. Charging a cold battery causes irreversible damage to the cells.
